The Rural Restoration Project, a 501(c)4 nonprofit (registration pending), is sponsoring a five-county listening tour on rural water quality and recreation issues for candidates seeking Iowa’s First Congressional District seat. Democrat Christina Bohannan, a University of Iowa law school professor, will visit Jefferson County’s Mac Coon Access park near the Jefferson-Henry county line northeast of Fairfield.
The event will be from 2:15-3:05 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 3293 Macoon Road, Lockridge.
The stop is part of an itinerary that includes visits in Van Buren, Mahaska and Keokuk counties. Bohannan will meet local conservation and water quality experts at Mac Coon Access, named for a game warden who served in the 1930s and 1940s. The park on the Skunk River is a popular destination for residents of Jefferson and Henry counties, with camping and river access for canoeing and kayaking.
The discussion will cover how federal programs can assist in supporting and upgrading similar facilities to improve groundwater quality and provide recreational opportunities. Bohannan will come to Mac Coon after discussing regenerative agriculture in rural Keosauqua and touring the Oskaloosa Wastewater Treatment Plant. She’ll end the day with a visit to Lake Belva Deer near Sigourney.
At each stop, Bohannan will discuss federal programs that support water quality and recreation and how Congress can strengthen and improve them. Leaders from the five counties of Iowa Senate District 44 founded the Rural Restoration Project to build economic and social opportunities in the area through education and advocacy.
