WASHINGTON — District 85 State Rep. Christina Bohannan, a Democrat running for Iowa’s District 1 Congressional seat, brought her campaign to Washington Sunday afternoon.
Art Domestique hosted a meet and greet for the Democratic congressional candidate.
Bohannan’s platform consists of public education reform, health care accessibility and affordability, revitalizing small towns, and bipartisan work.
Most of Bohannan’s platform is based on personal experience.
As a law professor and a student who has been educated in the public setting, Bohannan said that she stands on a foundation that public schools need better funding, teachers need better support, and vouchers will not benefit the majority of families.
“We need to stop passing bills that vilify teachers,” Bohannan said.
On another personal note, Bohannan’s father’s health issues and difficulties with insurance have formed her opinions on health care as well.
Bohannan is not an Iowa native, but attributes her desires to revitalize small towns to growing up in a small town in Florida.
According to Bohannan small towns, like those in Iowa, need different supports for workforce development.
“They need transportation, child care, broadband, and affordable housing,” Bohannan said.
The last specific leg of Bohannan’s platform is bipartisan work.
“We need to get back to a point where we can debate things without things getting so ugly,” Bohannan said.
Bohannan would say that debate makes us stronger, but the bitter politics in our country at the moment are not about healthy debate.
Bohannan additionally addressed issues such as inflation, and said that it was a complicated worldwide problem that cannot be blamed on Joe Biden.
Some of the blame for inflation was also placed on businesses that Bohannan said “maybe, maybe took advantage of our hard workers.”
There was a call to action made to look into companies who had raised product prices citing supply chain issues and then posted record breaking profits for the year.
Also, in the questions and answers segment of the meet and greet Bohannan took questions pertaining to immigration stating that she thinks that whole infrastructure of immigration needs to be seriously reconsidered.
