Second District Democratic Congressman Dave Loebsack visited Henry County Democratic Headquarters on Saturday and thanked campaign volunteers for their work getting out the vote for the upcoming critical election.
He took a moment to reflect on his days in Mt. Vernon doing exactly what the volunteers were doing to encourage citizens to vote.
The role of government was central in his brief comments. He recalled that he was raised by a single mother in extreme poverty and that Social Security Survivor Benefits were key to his getting through college and breaking a cycle of poverty and enabling him to join the middle class.
Loebsack spoke to the importance of a strong middle class and to America?s strength at home and abroad.
He reported it to be an affront to hard working Americans when Mitt Romney and John Archer demean seniors, veterans and the working poor who are among the 47% who receive some form of government benefits from their work and service.
Henry County Democratic Chair Dave Helman noted that in addition to Congressman Loebsack, former Mt. Pleasant Mayor and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack visited Henry County recently as did Senator Tom Harkin.
Helman observed that not since the Lincoln Administration has a member of the President?s Cabinet called Henry County home.
