Coralville man convicted in hotel room burglary
Jun. 27, 2021 12:19 pm
A Coralville man has been convicted on charges related to a September 2019 hotel room incident at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort.
On Thursday, following a three-day trial, a Washington County jury found Daniel Israel Alvarado Zorola, 48, guilty of burglary in the second degree – a Class C felony – and operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent – an aggravated misdemeanor.
According to a news release from Washington County Attorney John Gish, early in the morning on Sept. 16, 2019, Alvarado Zorola entered the hotel room of two women while they slept, using a room key one of the women had lost the night before.
While the women slept, Alvarado Zorola moved about the hotel room, taking one of the women’s car keys and room key.
The women were awakened when they heard someone taking a shower in their room and were subsequently startled to see Alvarado Zorola naked in their hotel room.
After getting dressed, Alvarado Zorola left the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort in a vehicle belonging to one of the women.
With the cooperation of the security and hotel staff, members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation leading to Alvarado Zorola’s arrest in December 2019.
Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 20, where Alvarado Zorola may face up to 12 years in prison.
