The Washington Park Board has requested that the city council approve the purchase of eight park benches to be placed around the Central Park fountain, which the council could do as early as Wednesday night at its regular meeting. Two of the eight benches will not have backs and will be placed between the fountain and the bandstand. The money for the benches was acquired through donations from service clubs and individuals. The cost of the benches with shipping is approximately $9,000.
Parks Supervisor Tim Widmer said the shrubberies southwest of the fountain will be removed so that people can view the bandstand while seated on the bench. He said a few benches around the fountain were removed a few years ago when new concrete was poured, and they have not been replaced. He said the new benches will be the same style as those around the square.
