Hundreds gathered in Crawfordsville Saturday night for a fundraiser pancake and sausage supper hosted by the local Lions Club. Club President Gene Miller said the tradition was around 50 years old.
“It’s the way we’ve always done it ... and it’s been successful,” he said.
Members said they expected 250-300 hungry community members at the city’s volunteer fire station, but had seen up to 400 in years past. The event’s proceeds went to the local, state and international Lions Club, the Crooked Creek 4-H club, and the fire department itself.
Group member Jennie Greene said the club was looking for new volunteers.
“We always need more members,” she said. “It’s a good way to get more members, it’s always good to give back to the community.”
Group member Scott Davis said he was happy to have the event’s social aspect back after last year’s was drive-thru only.
“A lot of people come in just to see each other, [people] they haven’t seen for a year,” he said. “Last year ... nobody got to talk to nobody and there was nobody in here. Now it’s just full from people.”
Davis said the event was the pinnacle of the Lion Club’s mission.
“We’re serving our community, and that’s what the Lions Club is about, serving the community and giving out to charitable organizations,” he said.
