CROP Walk held on the square

The ecumenical CROP Walk was held Sunday afternoon in Washington and was a success. The event was part of an effort to raise money for famine relief around the world. On the second Sunday in October, area churches organize a walk as a way of showing solidarity with the world?s hungry. This year?s event saw 70 participants take a stroll from the square to Sunset Park and back.
?We walk because they have to walk to get food, water, and basic necessities,? said Mary Atwood, who has been a CROP-walker every year since 1985.
Many church youth groups took part in the walk, making for a nice combination of walkers young and old.
?I?m glad to see we have a wide variety of ages here today,? said Atwood.
Before beginning the 1.5-mile trek, participants were treated to pizza and bottled water.
Organizer Erin Smith said that the participants worked hard to collect donations for the event. One-fourth of the proceeds will go to food pantries in the area while three-quarters will go to famine relief efforts in other countries.
