Ken Daley, head of the Maharishi University of Mangement Department of Exercise and Sport Science, is serving on a disparities council charged with improving the health of minorities in a four-state region.
The Office of Minority Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services selected Daley because of his role in fostering and leading wellness programs in Iowa.
?This appointment expands the influence and awareness of the M.U.M. Center for the Advancement of Latino Health and Prevention that professor Raul Calderon and I cofounded,? Daley said.
He is one of four Iowans among the 26 members of the Regional Health Equity Council. The mission of the council is to operationalize a strategic plan prepared by the government to end health disparities in minority populations.
The council recently held the first of its quarterly meetings. Daley?s initial role is to serve on the governance committee, which is establishing how the council will be organized and governed and how ongoing membership will be determined.
Daley said minority health issues are multifaceted ? social, behavioral, environmental, biological ? and improving the situation must entail focusing on multiple facets at once.
