Damage to Ron Prill Bandstand in Fairfield appears minimal

FAIRFIELD — The tree that fell on the Ron Prill Bandstand in Fairfield’s Central Park seems to have caused minimal damage.
Fairfield Parks Director Pam Craff said the tree that fell on the bandstand during a storm on Thursday, June 29, ripped a trim board off the roof. The city called upon contractor Steve Winslow to assess and fix the damage in a lift. Parks staff spent Thursday afternoon cutting the fallen tree and feeding it into a chipper, and by Friday afternoon the debris had been cleared. Craff said Mark Brown will remove the tree’s trunk, because the city doesn’t have a saw large enough to cut it down.
“The sad thing is, that’s not the tree I was thinking we’d have issues with,” Craff said.
Fairfield Central Park lost two large trees last week in separate incidents. On Tuesday, June 27, a large branch fell from a tree in the northwest part of the park, and within a day the parks staff had removed the whole tree because it would soon rot. Two days later, a storm blew through Fairfield and knocked down an even larger tree in the southwest part of the park, which fell on the bandstand.
“I think it was just a coincidence,” Craff said about the two trees falling down in the same week. “It’s a good thing it happened when it did because we have Art Walk Friday and Live on the Square Saturday. It’s good the trees fell during a storm and not when people were out and about. God’s looking out for the city of Fairfield.”
