Voters can still register on Election Day
Aug. 25, 2021 10:45 am
The deadline to preregister for the Washington Community School District special election on Sept. 14 (whether to approve General Obligation Bonds in an amount not to exceed $25 million) is Friday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m.
Alternatively, any person who is eligible to vote may register in-person on Election Day by completing a voter registration application, making a written oath, and providing proof of both identity and residence.
Registration on or before Sept. 3 is strongly encouraged to avoid delays at the polling place.
Washington County residents may register at the County Auditor’s Office at the courthouse in Washington or any driver’s license station.
The Auditor’s Office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and until 5 p.m. on Sept. 3. Since office hours of the driver’s license stations vary, it is advisable to call in advance if registering there.
Individuals who are currently registered to vote in Washington County and who have moved within the county may change their address at the polls on Election Day with proper identification but also are encouraged to register the change before Sept. 3.
Absentee ballots are now available as well.
Voters who want to vote by absentee ballot may do so in-person at the Washington County Auditor’s Office until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13. Auditor’s Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 30, Sept. 3 and Sept. 10.
Alternatively, a ballot can be mailed to a voter if they fill out and submit a request form. The ballot request form may be obtained from the Washington County Auditor’s Office or downloaded from the office’s website.
Requests for absentee ballots may be delivered or mailed to the Washington County Auditor, 222 West Main St., P.O. Box 889, Washington, IA 52353, and must be received in the Auditor’s Office no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30.
Anyone with questions should contact the Washington County Auditor’s Office at (319) 653-7717.
