MT. PLEASANT — As numbers of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus surge around Iowa, Henry County Public Health is looking to get more people vaccinated through regular vaccine clinics.
According to recent reports, the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is present in 80% of COVID-19 cases recorded in states around the Midwest including Missouri and Nebraska.
With the Delta variant more contagious than the original COVID-19 virus, many public health officials are worried that the virus may see a resurgence in some areas. With vaccination rates stagnating across Iowa and Henry County, the Delta variant could result in wave like numbers.
“The Delta variant can be quite contagious, but if you’re immunized it will protect you against it or if you do get it, it won’t be as severe,” said Henry County Public Heath Director Shelley Van Dorin.
She urges those that are unvaccinated currently and are able to get a vaccine to get their COVID-19 vaccine
“I think that everyone should get vaccinated not only for themselves but for people who can’t get immunized like children 0-12. Also for the elderly they can get it even after the vaccine, but if everyone is vaccinated it could prevent that,” Van Dorin said.
“Even if you’re not at risk for severe illness, that doesn't mean somebody you’re around wouldn’t be at risk,” she added.
The Henry County Public Health Office offers COVID-19 vaccinations at its regular immunization clinics including the J & J vaccine and the Moderna vaccine.
The clinic hours run:
- Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- Wednesday and Thursday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- First and third Thursday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Those that can’t be vaccinated can help slow the spread of the variant by continuing to wear a mask indoors in public, use good hand hygiene, and practice social distancing.
