FAIRFIELD – Republican Adrian Dickey won his re-election bid to the Iowa Senate and Republican Jeff Shipley was re-elected to the Iowa House of Representatives on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Dickey defeated Independence challenger Lisa Ossian for the Iowa State Senate District 44 seat, more than doubling her vote total with 19,112 votes (68 percent) to Ossian’s 8,781 votes (31 percent). Shipley defeated Democratic challenger Tom O’Donnell for the Iowa House District 87 seat, garnering 8,219 votes (58 percent) to O’Donnell’s 5,640 (40 percent). Curtis Oliver received 386 votes (2.7 percent).
Dickey said in a statement released after his victory that he wanted to thank all of Senate District 44 for supporting him in his election.
“It has been greatly appreciated and meant so much,” Dickey said. “In the past year, I’ve had lawsuits thrown at me, awful things done to me, and my opponent did nothing but spread lies about me. Through all of the negative rhetoric, I am proud of the positive campaign that I ran and last night voters in SD44 rewarded my positive campaign by re-electing me to a third term with nearly 70% of the vote! THANK YOU for your support and THANK YOU for allowing me to continue to “Protect What Common Sense Looks Like”!”
When asked for a comment after the race, Ossian said that “I have been thanked by voters in this Senate district for providing a choice.”
Shortly after the results came out for his House district counties around 10:30 p.m., Shipley commented on his Facebook page that he thanked the voters of “Henry, Jefferson, and Van Buren counties for electing me to another term as your State Representative!”
“I’m honored to share that I was re-elected by the largest margin of victory I’ve enjoyed to date,” Shipley wrote. “It’s a privilege to stand with President Donald J. Trump and the Make America Great Again – Make America Healthy Again agenda. The Iowa Legislature has important work ahead, and I hope we can bridge divides and build consensus together as a community.”
Shipley wrote that he hoped to find common ground on topics such as nourishing children with “real food, free of harmful additives,” “ensuring age-appropriateness of school materials,” “keeping taxes low and eliminating unnecessary spending” and a few other items.
O’Donnell stated via text message Wednesday morning that the Republican Party’s voter registration advantage in House District 87 meant that “even a sensible, centrist candidate will have difficulty getting into office.”
“This election likely means our rural public schools will continue to decline,” O’Donnell wrote. “We offered a reasonable alternative and ran a vigorous campaign. We’re proud of what we accomplished.”
