FAIRFIELD – Douds Stone has acquired Fairfield business Winn Corp.
Chuck Manson, general manager of Douds Stone, said the change in ownership was finalized Jan. 19, and that Douds Stone has taken possession of Winn Corp’s quarries and equipment. Winn Corp was a family-owned business operated by Bill and Peggy Winn, and Terry and Crystal Winn. It ran the Jefferson County Quarry southwest of Fairfield and Wapello County Sand & Rock in Ottumwa. Manson said some of the employees of Winn Corp have since joined Douds Stone since the acquisition.
Manson said Douds Stone sought the acquisition of Winn Corp because its quarries fit right into Douds Stone’s operation, and were valuable because of their close proximity. Douds Stone already had quarries or sand pits surrounding Fairfield, so it made perfect sense to acquire Jefferson County Quarry and Wapello County Sand & Rock.
Douds Stone is headquartered in Ottumwa, and operates 15 sites throughout Southeast Iowa including a cluster in and around Douds with quarries in Douds, Eldon, Selma and Floris. It runs a quarry south of Mt. Pleasant as well as in Wayland, West Chester, Ollie, and three between Ottumwa and Oskaloosa.
“Douds Stone has been in business since 1927, and we go from Burlington to Albia, from the Missouri line up to I-80,” Manson said. “We have primarily limestone quarries, but we have sand plants, too.”
Manson said his company supplies rock for cities and counties in the area. According to Douds Stone’s website, it also provides rip rap for bridges and river banks, clean stone and washed products, and aglime for fertilizer application.
Manson said the acquisition of Winn Corp will allow Douds Stone to better serve customers in Fairfield and Ottumwa with its new quarry and sand plant.
