FAIRFIELD – Fairfield City Council member Doug Flournoy received a Certificate of Appreciation from Mayor Connie Boyer on Monday night, Dec. 15, during Flournoy’s final meeting as a council member.
Flournoy ends a 12-year stint as an at-large council member. He chose not to seek re-election to his seat but instead run for mayor, a race he lost to Boyer. The other members of the council and city staff held a party for Flournoy after the meeting, along with a cake. Flournoy said he appreciated the gesture, and is thankful for the dozen years he spent on the council.
“I learned a lot, and I think I’ve helped a lot of people,” Flournoy said. “Most recently, I was able to identify a source of funding for the sustainability coordinator. And for the special election [in September], that was the first election we’ve ever had for city council. I feel good about that, because I don’t believe in appointments.”
Flournoy plans to use his newfound free time for both relaxation and civic projects. He’s looking forward to spending more time going on motorcycle rides, working on his house, and doing “as much dancing as I can.” He’d also like to get some traveling in.
“I dream of flying to Lisbon, going down to Morocco, going over to Egypt and back to Madrid,” he said. “I’ve never been to Africa before, and I want to hit all the continents.”
Flournoy is also an active member of Fairfield Rotary and has assisted with the club’s charitable efforts overseas, such as helping to drill a well for a town in Nepal, which Flournoy got to visit in 2019. This past weekend, Flournoy started work on another international humanitarian project: the creation of a hospital care pavilion in Cartagena, Colombia, partnering with the Rotary Club of Cartagena, Colombia, and the Rotary Club of Lake Orion Sunrise in Michigan.
