The discovery of an existing ordinance means the Fairfield Community School District could implement one-way traffic on Broadway Avenue sooner than thought.
In reviewing Fairfield?s code, city administrator Jeff Clawson found a standing ordinance permitting one-way traffic on East Broadway Avenue, traveling east to west from Forest Drive to D Street when appropriately designated by signs.
The district had requested one-way traffic from Maple Street to D Street at the start and end of the school day. Officials had thought the change would require three readings to establish an ordinance and implementation was pushed back to the next school year.
Because an ordinance already exists, implementation is now up the school board, which Fred McElwee, the school system?s director of auxiliary services, will approach during its January meeting.
The school district will be responsible for managing the signs and directing traffic for the one-way.
At a Fairfield City Council Public Safety and Transportation Committee meeting Tuesday evening, McElwee reported seven of the homeowners affected by the one-way street supported the change. Another two expressed concern.
Also at the committee meeting, plans to construct an off-leash dog park at O.B. Nelson Park were discussed. The committee and park and recreation department director Derik Wulfekuhle supported a proposal to instead construct the park at Lamson Woods.
