The Fairfield Art Association's 2024 Summer Camp featured a variety of art forms for young artists.
En-Plein Air Watercolor took place in Howard Park, and farm pond fish were printed on rice paper where children learned the Japanese technique of "Gyotaku.“ Another day, Metallic Foil & Oil Pastel Collages were created, along with dying ball-caps with a shaving cream method.
To create fabric printed T-shirts, students collected a variety of nearby leaves and flowers which they painted on one side and then placed on white T-shirts like stamp printing. An exercise in learning to draw involved oil pastels and passing different fruit from person to person, capturing the essence of each on their paper quickly.
A Chihuly project proved challenging, changing the shape of dura-lar sheets into bowls and making colorful items with markers and then hot gunning to further re-shape.
A favorite project of the students was learning about Mehndi, the traditional application of henna to the hands and feet, using repetitive patterns. To do this in our studio, black plastic gloves were placed on their hands and bright opaque markers were used for drawing designs.
All these Art Camp lessons were taught by artists and FAA board members volunteering their expertise, including: Jasmin Bode, Deb Doyle, Jessica Garchik, Matt Guise, Eileen Hawthorn, Suzan Kessel, Wyndy Rutledge, and Werner Elmker.
