ALBIA ? Fairfield couldn?t hold its fourth-quarter lead and Albia ran away with a 56-50 victory in girls? action Tuesday night.
After Fairfield (1-4) jumped out to a slim lead in the final period, the Lady Dees (3-2) took off an 11-3 run that spanned more than five minutes to take a lead they would never give back.
McKenzie Wynn led Albia with 16 points and did much of that damage from the free throw line. The calls that put Wynn on the line also helped keep the Trojans in foul trouble for much of the night, most notably, leading scorers Sidney Baumann and Serena Ward.
Ward finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Tori Ogden finally found her stroke to lead the way with a game-high 20 points.
The Trojans led much of the first half before relinquishing the lead mid-way through the third period and were outscored by a total of 33-22 in the second half.
A big night now awaits Fairfield as Southeast Conference foe Washington will be in town Friday night.
Boys: Albia 65, Fairfield 48
ALBIA ? Fairfield finally found a bit of a rhythm on the offensive end, but couldn?t contain Albia on the other end as the Blue Demons rolled to a 65-48 win over the Trojans.
After enduring what figures to be the toughest stretch of the season over the weekend with losses to Mount Pleasant and Ottumwa, Fairfield (0-4) is still looking to play a complete game.
?We got through the weekend where we really struggled offensively. We saw some more aggressiveness there, but backed off on the defensive intensity,? said head coach Tyler Miklo. ?Some things that we were happy about from the weekend were a little bit of a let down.?
Curt Coughlin scored 24 points as Albia (2-1) slowly pulled away the entire game. Coughlin?s big night was enough to spoil a 21-point effort from Fairfield?s leading man Grant Curran. Braz Johnson added 11 points, Jordan Leazer scored nine while he and Cody Kool each had six rebounds for the Trojans.
The loss is just part of a treacherous early-season slate for Fairfield that has Washington coming to town Friday night for the home opener.
?It?s good to see these teams and see the things to improve on,? Miklo added. ?It?s trial by fire, and because these guys haven?t play a whole lot together, you can see the difference against teams that have.?
