FAIRFIELD — Dozens of residents turned out Thursday to visit the recently renovated Fairfield Community Center during a Business After Hours.
The event, put on by the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce, showcased the two-story brick building at 209 S. Court St. in Fairfield. The chamber served beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks to guests.
The Fairfield Community Center’s board of directors wanted to show off the building after renovating it last year. The board’s president, Francis Horn, is also a contractor, and he gave the board a reduced rate to fix up the building.
During Thursday’s Business After Hours, Francis and his wife Kathy were on hand to celebrate the occasion. Francis said he was proud of the work that was put into making the building look nice, and was quick to add that he had a lot of help in the form of other board members and volunteers.
The Fairfield Community Center was formerly known as the Fairfield Senior Citizen Center until it changed its name in 2018. The name change was prompted by a couple of factors, one of which was that the state of Iowa thought the board overseeing the center, the Jefferson County Area on Aging, was too similar sounding to the state agency Iowa Area Agencies on Aging. The other reason was that the Fairfield Community Center board wanted to market the building as a venue for all ages.
