Fairfield Community Garden needs volunteers for work parties Nov. 15, 18
Nov. 12, 2023 3:21 pm
The Fairfield Community Garden has announced that it is seeking volunteers for a couple of work days this week before the cold, winter temperature sets in.
The organization is asking volunteers to meet at O.B. Nelson Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, and from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18. Volunteers are needed to build and fill the raised beds planned for the garden, which was recently created earlier this fall on a patch of grassland on the west edge of the park.
“We will be building and filling raised beds, and we need volunteers plus extra wheel barrows, shovels, and battery operated drills,” said Fairfield Community Garden Project Leader Barbara Rainbow. “The lumber has been cut, and we will use drills to screw the boards together. Next, we will cut and remove the felt landscape fabric from inside the beds and then use wheelbarrows to fill the beds with composted soil. Our goal is to move all of the soil into the beds.”

In late September, a group of volunteers gathered at O.B. Nelson Park to install a fence around the area that next year will host raised garden beds.
The Sustainable Living Coalition is the fiscal sponsor of this project, and its board is providing leadership. The Fairfield Volunteer Center and Habitat for Humanity ReStore have played critical roles as well, contributing labor and materials.
