The Fairfield City Council approved a resolution at its meeting Dec. 27 calling for a city referendum on a new fire station for March 1.
The referendum, which all registered voters in Fairfield can vote on, will ask voters if they wish to approve a $5 million bond to build a new fire station.
The exact verbiage of the referendum reads: “Shall the city of Fairfield, Iowa, enter into a loan agreement and issue its general obligation capital loan notes in an amount not to exceed $5,000,000 for the purpose of acquisition, construction, reconstruction, improvement and equipping of a fire station?”
The city has announced a plan to build a new fire station at the corner of West Briggs Avenue after demolishing vacant buildings previously used by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The city purchased that lot in 2020.
A fire station task force was formed in 2021 and, after reviewing some sites, including building a new fire station at the existing property on North Second Street, recommended to the council building a new fire station a couple of blocks away on West Briggs.
