FAIRFIELD - The Fairfield City Council heard the initial findings Monday on the search for a new fire station.
The city hired Klingner and Associates of Quincy, Ill., to investigate sites in town for a possible new home for the fire station, now on North Second Street. The firm is looking into four possibilities: remodeling the current location; the former Iowa Department of Transportation building on West Briggs Avenue that the city purchased earlier this summer; a site near The Depot Brewery on North Fourth Street; and constructing a new building south of the Jefferson County Law Center on West Grimes Avenue.
During Monday's council meeting, a company representative shared what it had concluded thus far during its investigation, which is not yet complete. So far, the company has looked at response times, how quickly firefighters could response to various parts of the city from the fire station. The top two contenders were the existing location and the former DOT property.
The rest of the investigation will cover a broader range of issues such as the cost of renovation and the amount of space for new equipment.

Klingner and Associates reported to the Fairfield City Council Monday on its investigation into possible locations in town for a new fire station. A company representative said that, based on response times, the two best options thus far appear to be the fire station's current location on North Second Street and the former Department of Transportation building on West Briggs Avenue.
