MOUNT PLEASANT ? With state berths on the line Thursday in Mount Pleasant, the Fairfield girls? track squad squeezed four events through to Des Moines, but there?s no telling how many more may follow suit.
Fairfield juniors Sydney Howard and Jessica Lamb ran as advertised and will be making return trips to the state meet, and both will run with Erin Thompson and Cierra Bielinski in the 4x200. Several of the foursome?s teammates missed the top two in events and will have to wait a little longer to find out their fates.
Howard became a two-time district champion in the 100-meter dash finishing with a time of 12.45 seconds ? more than a half second faster than second-place Breanna Boyle of Centerville (13.09). Last year, Howard won the event in 12.61 seconds. The Trojan junior also won the 200-dash for the first time and again was just as dominant finishing in 25.97 seconds.
Lamb also qualified individually with a win in the open-800 (2:24.17). The Trojan junior did just enough to out-sprint Mount Pleasant?s Chloe Haffarnan (2:24.49) to the finish line.
The Trojans had a solid finish as a team, scoring a total of 91.5 points to take third place. Williamsburg crashed the party with 167.5 points for the district title, while host and conference champion Mount Pleasant came in second with 158.
?Getting third as a team was good,? said Fairfield head coach Ron Hunerdosse. ?All the kids did a nice job competing in a tough field.?
Sophomore Marisa Repp jumped at her best in the high jump to post a state-worthy mark of 5-feet. Repp just missed the top two, finishing third in the field event, and will see where she lands when the top-24 list is released.
Sidney Baumann ran into one of the top discus throwers in the state and didn?t finish top two, but the junior kept her name in the state-qualifying conversation with one of her best throws to date. Baumann?s toss of 117-feet, 1.5-inches placed her third at the meet behind Dakotah Goodell of Williamsburg (135? 8?) and Centerville?s Meaghan Foster (118? 1?). The junior placed sixth at the district meet last season with a throw of 106-feet. 4.5-inches.
Other events on the bubble for Fairfield include the 4x800 (9:56), 4x400 (4:12.91) and sprint medley (1:57.11) relays.
Hannah Sobaski, Lamb, Thompson and Sesali Martin opened the day in the 4x800 with a third-place finish in 9:56.39. The sprint-medley team of McKenzie McClure, Sydney Burnett, Bielinski and Thompson finished fourth (1:57.11); while Lamb, Thompson, Howard and Repp were fourth in the 4x400 (4:12.91).
The Trojans on the bubble will now wait for the official qualifying list and prepare for the state track meet slated to begin Thursday in Des Moines.
