FAIRFIELD – Fairfield High School had to be evacuated briefly on Saturday, Jan. 7 while the school hosted the SEIBA (Southeast Iowa Band Association) Honor Band Festival.
FHS Principal Aiddy Phomvisay said that a fire in the home economics room set off smoke alarms and forced those attending the Honor Band Festival to leave the building for about 30 minutes. Phomvisay said some people were keeping pizzas warm in the home economics room, and one of the cardboard pizza boxes caught fire in the oven, producing smoke that set off the alarms.
Phomvisay said that, luckily, no one was hurt, and the only damage from the fire was to the oven. Once the smoke cleared out, attendees to the Honor Band Festival were let back inside.
