FAIRFIELD – Fairfield’s downtown was packed Saturday morning for the annual Kiwanis Kids’ Day, which featured a parade, pancakes, pedal pull and kids’ activities in Central Park.
Fairfield Kiwanis member Daryn Hamilton said the day went swimmingly, and that he and his fellow club members received a lot of compliments about the parade and how many floats it had.
“This year, the last entry in the parade was just leaving the [high school] parking lot when the very front of the parade was getting back to the high school,” Hamilton said. “I think the whole thing lasted 40 minutes.”
The Kiwanis Club was also pleased with ticket sales for the pancake breakfast, with more than 1,800 people coming through the doors of the big tent.
“The Kiwanis Club also set a record for how fast we got the tent folded up and put away before a single drop of rain fell on it,” Hamilton joked. “If it gets wet, that becomes a big hassle since we have to find a place to let it dry out.”
All of the kids’ activities in Central Park were popular, as evidenced by the long lines for each one including the pony rides, bounce houses, face-painting and Cuddles the Clown’s balloon animals.
Hamilton is also a member of Collector Cars Unlimited, which held its annual car show the following day in downtown Fairfield. Hamilton said that event went very well, too, and that 82 cars registered.
“We had the cars around three sides of the square, so the downtown looked packed with classic cars Sunday,” Hamilton said. “We didn’t have cars going down the side streets on Court or Main. By concentrating the cars on the three sides of the square, it showed that we have a lot of cars at our car show. Even the show participants said that this was a much better way to do the show. I’m hoping we can get over 100 cars next year.”
Hamilton said that, before Sunday’s car show, he was worried that this might be the final car show that Collector Cars Unlimited puts on, because its membership has dwindled to just four core members. However, Hamilton received good news on Sunday when a couple of groups from Ottumwa approached him to say that they would be willing to help Fairfield’s club set up and tear down the day of its car show.
