FAIRFIELD — A vacant home in Fairfield caught fire Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 1, but there were no injuries.
The home was located at 702 W. Briggs Ave., and a resident reported it on fire at 3:20 p.m. that day. Fairfield firefighters arrived on scene and were there for about an hour before the fire was extinguished and they were back in service at the station.
Fairfield Fire Chief Brett Ferrel said the firefighters sprayed water from the outside while also performing an “interior attack” in one of the rooms. The fire started on the first floor and spread through the eaves into the second floor. Ferrel said the home suffered significant damage from smoke and water.
Ferrel said the evidence points to the fire’s origin being electrical. He said it’s a good reminder for homeowners to be cautious about overloading the outlets in their home, and to ensure that they don’t put flammable things like blankets on top of an extension cord, charger or other electrical device that gets warm.
