Fairfield JV softball concludes season

OTTUMWA ? The Fairfield JV softball team has played many close games this season, so it was only fitting the girls finished the season with a pair of one-run contests Tuesday in Ottumwa.

The Trojans lost the opener of a doubleheader with the Bulldogs 5-4, then stranded the tying run on third base in the fifth inning of game two for a 3-2 loss.

?We had a lot of games determined by one run [this season],? Fairfield coach Lisa Greenig said. ?Even though we lost both games, our girls worked hard despite the 100 degree temperatures all day.?

The Trojans were held to five total hits in the two games, but Greenig said the tally could?ve been higher on a different day.

?Some days they drop and some days they don?t,? said Greenig. ?Nonetheless, it is encouraging to see consistent contact while at bat.?

In the opener, Kelsey Roberts and Emma Kuehl tallied one RBI apiece, and both Paris Bickham and Jasmine Elmore singled. Alyssa Fitch and Gabrielle Kuehl singled in game two, and Abby Adam and Taylor Ferrel knocked in one run each.

From the mound, Mikaela Amendt allowed five runs on seven hits in the five-inning first game. Delaney Neil tossed seven frames of three-run ball in the second game, striking out two and allowing five hits.

Fairfield JV softball?s season comes to an end with a record of 17-26.

?We expect many of the same players to return next year,? Greenig added. ?We also anticipate a talented group of eighth-graders who will be moving up to play high school softball.?
