FAIRFIELD — A Fairfield man has been arrested and charged with assault and interference with official acts, after allegedly barricading himself in a residence while armed with a knife.
Jesus Garcia-Goytia, 31, was arrested Thursday, Dec. 1 after an incident that occurred in the 100 block of South Fourth Street in Fairfield. According to police reports filed through Iowa Courts Online, Fairfield police officers responded to a call from a woman who claimed Garcia-Goytia shoved her down the stairs while wielding a knife. She told them that she went to his residence for a welfare check.
When officers arrived at the scene, they asked Garcia-Goytia to come down the stairs so they could get his side of the story, but he refused, according to police reports. Officers asked Garcia-Goytia if he had any weapons, and he told them he had a knife. After repeated attempts to get Garcia-Goytia to come down the stairs, he stopped talking to officers and retreated into a side room on the second floor of the building.
Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding said that Garcia-Goytia was finally arrested after a three-hour standoff with law enforcement from multiple agencies. He was taken to the Jefferson County Health Center for minor injuries, and then booked into the county jail on charges of assault via display or use of a weapon, and interference with official acts while in possession of a dangerous weapon.
As of Tuesday, Garcia-Goytia remained in custody on a $5,000 bond.
