Fairfield residents had hoped to resume using the railroad crossings in town, which have been closed for about two weeks, and were expected to open on Friday, June 16.
However, officials with Burlington Northern Santa Fe informed the City of Fairfield that the crossings would need to remain closed a few more days. BNSF intends to start opening crossings as soon as they are finished with them, beginning on the west end of town and working east.
The company expects to open the crossing at Ninth Street by Tuesday evening, June 20, with the other crossings to follow later in the week.
The crossings that have been affected by construction are those at D, B, Court, Main, Fourth and Ninth streets. The only two crossings in Fairfield not affected by construction are the underpass on Second Street, and the crossing on 23rd Street on the west edge of town.
