The city of Fairfield experienced a sanitary sewer overflow Thursday resulting in 84,748 gallons of untreated wastewater to be discharged.
The discharge was due to heavy snowmelt coupled with rainfall that occurred Wednesday through Thursday.
The first discharge was from manhole 17-29 north of the wastewater facility with about 80,607 gallons being discharged to Crow Creek. The sanitary sewer overflow was from manhole 15-14 located near Libertyville Road, and it discharged an estimated 4,141 gallons.
The city is currently in the design stage as well as in flow studies with McClure Engineering and French-Reneker Associates to evaluate solutions to the inflow and infiltration problems. Many sanitary sewer upgrades and treatment plant upgrades will be started in the near future designed to alleviate the overflows.
