KEOKUK ? Fairfield?s Jeff Guttry jumped into the Class 2A individual rankings this week and defended the honor with a match-cliching pin for the Trojans Thursday night.
With Fairfield holding just six-point advantage and within Keokuk?s striking distance, Guttry turned the tables and sent his team home with a 37-25 Southeast Conference victory.
The win keep the Trojans undefeated through five dual meets this season with matches against Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant coming up later this month to potentially win the SEC crown.
Ninth-ranked Guttry pinned Dalton Jensen at 171 pounds and was joined by three teammates with wins by fall. Fifth-ranked Dakota Simmons (125), seventh-ranked Michael Smithburg (285) and 189-pounder Seth Davisson also held opponents down for the three-count.
Jake Mineart, sandwiched by wins from Davisson and Smithburg, also won an 8-3 decision at 215
The bottom of the Fairfield lineup was missing in action for the second straight meet as Keokuk climbed back with forfeits at both 112 and 119. Keokuk?s eighth-ranked Chase Helenthal was the winner at 119.
Ammon Shaner (130), Quinton Bradfield (135) and Aaron Gevock (140) all pulled out decisions of varying difficulty to build a Fairfield lead that ended up sticking.
The Chiefs? rally was capped by Ryan Maxwell?s overtime victory vs. Jac Pilcher, 6-4, but it came up short thanks to Guttry?s win one match later.
The Trojans have looked as impressive as ever coming out of winter break and hope to continue that trend starting with Saturday?s trip to the Ottumwa Invitational, which will get started at 10:30 a.m.
