Fairfield swimmers dive back in vs. Ottumwa

OTTUMWA ? The Fairfield swim team returned to the water Tuesday at its season-opening dual in Ottumwa.

Missing a few key swimmers and outnumbered 21 to 10, the Trojans fell to the host Bulldogs 150-43. They won 2 of 13 events.

?This was a good first meet for us to experience,? said Fairfield head coach Lisa Greenig, who is in her first season. ?Our girls have now established their baseline beginning meet times. This will enable them to know what they want to work on to improve throughout the season.?

Baylee Bowman, a state qualifier as a sophomore last season, gave Fairfield both its wins Tuesday. Bowman?s time of 2:31.93 in the 200-individual medley was nearly 20 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher, and she beat the field by more than a minute in the 500-freestyle (6:04). The junior also swam the leadoff leg of the second-place 400-freestyle relay alongside Allison Angstead, Paige Palmer and Dorian Larson. The foursome topped two Ottumwa relay teams with a time of 4:45.

Hanna Kerr, a senior, scored a handful of points, as well. The veteran swimmer finished second in the 50-freestyle (33.17) and third in the 100-backstroke (1:20.16). Dorian Larson was third in the 200-freestyle (2:38.33).

Fairfield?s Jaci Bell and Katherine Mueller were unable to compete in the diving portion of the meet with Ottumwa?s pool depth at 9 feet.

The Fairfield swimmers ? and divers ? will be back in the pool competing Saturday in Muscatine.
