Fairfield to host third annual ‘Walk for Nohema’ on April 20

FAIRFIELD – The Fairfield High School Student Council is inviting the public to attend the Third Annual Walk for Nohema on Saturday, April 20.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon at Chautauqua Park. It is both a fundraiser and an opportunity to honor former FHS Spanish teacher Nohema Graber, who died in 2021.
This year’s event will feature a silent auction to raise funds for the scholarship for seniors in her name. FHS Family and Consumer Science teacher Heidi Grunwald said the Student Council decided not to sell T-shirts this year like it has the last two years, and instead do hot pink wrist bands with the words “Peace & Love” and “Amor y Paz” emblazoned on them.
Baskets for the silent auction will be provided by clubs, organizations, businesses and families, which can be bid on throughout the walk. The auction will end at 11:45 a.m.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the high school.
Nohema (Castillo y Castillo) Graber was a Spanish teacher at Fairfield High School for more than eight years. She was born a native of Mexico, and was very involved in the Latino community in Fairfield, as well as being active at St. Mary Catholic Church. She also enjoyed reading, and was an avid walker at Chautauqua Park.
Today, a bench in Chautauqua Park bears Graber’s name, and residents place flowers there as a way to honor her.
In 2023, two Fairfield teenagers, Chaiden Miller and Jeremy Goodale, pleaded guilty to murdering Graber. Both were sentenced to life in prison.
