FAIRFIELD – The Fairfield Community School District is accepting bids on its former Lincoln Elementary School building, located at 401 W. Stone Ave.
The district announced its intention to sell the building as a way to generate revenue and because it has used the building merely as cold storage for several years. The elementary school closed in 2013, and after that the building housed classes for the Career Academy. The high school’s drama department has stored costumes there, and it served as a polling place for Fairfield’s Second Ward as recently as 2022.
Fairfield school board president Tai Ward said the building has sat empty for several years, and the district no longer runs electricity to it.
“It’s not costing us a ton to run that building, mostly just maintenance on the grounds,” Ward said.
Ward said that when the school board was looking for ways to improve its finances a few weeks ago, it saw that selling this asset made good financial sense.
Fairfield schools Chief Financial Officer Evan Marten issues a news release Tuesday indicating that bids for the building would be accepted until noon on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Those interested in purchasing it should submit an Offer to Purchase Real Estate form, accompanied by a written proposal describing their planned use of the property, to Superintendent Stephanie Mishler at the District Office (403 South 20th St., Fairfield, IA 52556).
Marten wrote that the school board intends to approve a proposal at its meeting on June 3.
Those interested in purchasing the building will have a few opportunities to view it. The district is scheduling appointments to view the building for Monday, April 22 and Friday, May 3, and in addition will host an open house from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at the building.
