Fairfield?s eighth-graders win Mount Pleasant Invitational

MOUNT PLEASANT ? Fairfield Middle School?s seventh-grade girls won their first team title of the season April 8, but Saturday was the eighth-graders? turn at the Mount Pleasant Invitational.
In just their second meet out, Fairfield?s eighth-graders amassed 138 points and picked up six victories on their way to edging out host Mount Pleasant (132) for the meet victory. Keokuk finished a distant third with 80 points.
Leading the Trojans to victory was Kenady Waugh, who claimed three wins on the day. The eighth-grade sprinter took first place in the 100-dash with a winning time of 13.57, and she won the 200 in 29.06 ticks. Waugh also picked up a victory in the 400, where she ran to the finish line in 1:05.65.
Fairfield?s Mikaela Lunsford earned a victory in the shot put with a throw of 27-feet, 9.5-inches, while classmate Kailey Kaska posted the top mark in the high jump at 4-feet, 6-inches. The distance medley team of Anna Lepcin, Jada Lippincott, Kaylee Watson and Kylie Kurtz also won in 5:14.
Ashlyn Elmore placed second in the 1500 (6:15), and Watson was second in the discus (73? 3?). The 4x800 team of Elmore, Maggie Ferrel, Ryan Pate and Anuja Pharasi was runner-up (12:08), while Brynna Bowman, Sarah Swanson, Lippincott and Kurtz ran the sprint medley to second place (2:13.26). The 4x400 consisting of Lunsford, Lepcin, Watson and Jersey Dennis also finished second (5:08).
Third-place finishes came from Olivia Hammel in the shot put (25? 9?) and Elmore in the 800-run (2:56). Fairfield?s shuttle hurdle relay finished third in 1:23.25, and the 4x200 (2:09.04) and 4x100 (59.63) earned bronze.
Along with the seventh-grade girls, the Trojan eighth-graders will host the Fairfield Relays on Monday.
Seventh-graders third in team race
The FMS seventh-grade girls placed third out of seven teams at Saturday?s track meet in Mount Pleasant, scoring 110 points on a pair of victories.
Host Mount Pleasant scored 136 points to take the team title, and Keokuk also finished ahead of Fairfield with 120.
The seventh-grade Trojans received a win from the distance medley crew of Taylor Myers, Sophie Allen, Lucia Van Dijk and Nicole Buch (5:13). They also had a win from the 4x100 team of Amiah Neff, Aluna Olaniyi, Amanda Carminhato and Ashtyn Drish (58.28).
The Trojans had several runner-up finishes, including Buch in both the 800 (2:48) and 1500-meter run (5:54), plus Drish in the 200-dash (30.31) and 400 (1:10.56). Neff tacked on a second-place finish in the 100-dash, and her time of 13.49 would have been fast enough to win the eighth-grade event.
Fairfield?s sprint medley relay team consisting of Olaniyi, Myers, Neff and Ashley Pool also ran fast enough to claim second place (2:17.33).
Third-place finishes were supplied by the Trojans? shuttle hurdle relay (1:30) as well as the 4x200 (2:14.95). The 4x400 also finished third in 5:10.
Weather permitting, the Trojan girls will host the Fairfield Relays on Monday.
