FAIRFIELD — Waste Management announced Monday morning, March 16 that it would not send its trucks out to pick up trash at several locations in Southeast Iowa that day, due to the blizzard.
Among the towns affected are Fairfield and New London, and trash pick up for both towns will be delayed one day, with homes normally served on Monday to be served on Tuesday instead.
Waste Management representative Lisa Disbrow told The Union that the company will pick up Fairfield homes on their normal schedule starting Tuesday through the rest of the week, so only the Monday customers will be on a one-day delay.
Fairfield City Engineer and Public Works Director Melanie Carlson said the city did not need to call a snow emergency because road crews were able to clear the downtown in a timely manner Monday morning. Representatives of the city governments of Mt. Pleasant and Washington also confirmed they were not calling for a snow emergency in their towns, either. Fairfield city offices were running on schedule, with the lone exception of the Cambridge Recreation Center starting later than normal at 8 a.m. Monday.
Carlson said that, with the large amount of ice build-up followed by sunny weather and lots of thawing, residents should be on the lookout for flooded intersections. To report these, residents may call City Hall at 641-472-6193 during business hours, and after hours they can direct calls to the non-emergency line to the Jefferson County Law Center at 641-472-4146.
Officials with the Jefferson County Secondary Roads Department told The Union Monday morning that most county roads were covered with snow, and they were working to put sand down to give them more traction, while also advising the public to avoid traveling if possible.
Alliant Energy representative Georgina Dunks told The Union that the blizzard caused “several small-scale outages” but that crews responded “quickly and safely, and none were prolonged.”
