Mary Elgar's support for President-elect Joe Biden did not waver during his 2020 presidential campaign.
Though Biden lost the Iowa caucuses, Elgar held out hope he would prevail over time.
As she watched Biden be sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts Wednesday, her mind no doubt went back to all of the times she has met the new president over the years, most recently last Jan. 31 in Mt. Pleasant.
'In today's caucuses, it's harder for so many candidates to set themselves apart, to get their message across in such a short amount of time,” she said.
She added that she knew Biden and his team would be successful in the long run, once people began to understand what exactly he stood for.
Part of Elgar's support for Biden comes from the numerous times they met, dating to his first presidential candidacy in 1988.
'During my time as the Henry County Democrats chair, I got to meet Biden over the years,” she said. 'He's just a genuine guy, someone who is warm and cordial and looks you in the eye.”
Her most memorable meeting with the president-elect happened last year at a rally the weekend before the Iowa caucuses. She was working the registration booth at the front of the hall when Biden came through the back, asking specifically for her.
Elgar had just won the 2019 Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance's Citizen of the Year award the night before, and Biden wanted to personally congratulate her.
'It was a special moment I'll always treasure,” she said.
Elgar is looking forward to Biden's presidency and his ambitious agenda for his first 100 days in office. She supports his plan to fight COVID-19 with 100 million vaccines, as well as the COVID relief stimulus package. She said that small businesses and those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic are suffering and in dire need of actual help.
'We need to help those who are struggling, and I am hopeful that Biden will get the job done,” Elgar said.
'He's just a genuine guy, someone who is warm and cordial and looks you in the eye.”
