FAIRFIELD — The family of Judy Alexander presented a check to The Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties as a memorial gift upon her recent passing.
Judy Alexander passed away on Nov. 11 in Iowa City at the age of 70. In the weeks that followed, her family established a memorial in her honor to raise funds for a cause she cared deeply about, The Arc of Jefferson & Nearby Counties. The memorial raised $2,100. On Monday, Dec. 19, members of the Alexander family presented the check to representatives of The Arc, Treasurer Barb Withrow and member Ronnie Withrow.
Members of the Alexander family on hand for the occasion were Judy’s husband Doug, son Jeff, and grandchildren Josh, Jacob and Ashlynne.
Doug said Judy was a member of The Arc for at least 20 years.
“We knew she would want this money to go there,” he said.
The Arc focuses on providing resources to developmentally challenged children and adults. Some of its activities involve sponsoring children to attend Camp Courageous and Camp Sunnyside, giving grants to local Special Olympic teams, purchasing materials for special education teachers, and providing children with special needs swim passes to the Roosevelt Aquatic Center.
Doug said Judy felt strongly about The Arc’s mission because she worked with developmentally challenged people on a regular basis through her job. Judy created Southeast Iowa Case Management, a company that served developmentally challenged people by putting them in jobs and homes, according to her obituary. Southeast Iowa Case Management served clients in 25 counties. In 1999, Judy was named Fairfield Iowa Businesswoman of the Year by the Fairfield Business & Professional Women.
