A resident of Kalona was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia and controlled substances. Aaron Neuzil, 24, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals from his residence in the 900 block of Eighth Street at approximately 1 p.m. Friday. A criminal charge is merely an allegation. All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar said deputy Nathan Schmuecker was at the scene with the marshals. Dunbar said the marshals were there to serve a warrant on Neuzil.
?If they are going to serve a warrant, they?ll let us know,? Dunbar said. ?Typically, they request a marked car and a uniformed officer to be there. The marshals could be in a suit and tie, khakis or in their tactical uniforms. Having a uniformed officer there is nice because it?s an officer people recognize. It let?s people know that law enforcement are there.?
Dunbar said the presence of someone who is clearly a police officer let?s people know that the marshals, who may not be in uniform, are genuine officers and not impersonators.
?Anybody can dress up like whoever they want and knock on the door,? Dunbar said. ?A local person people recognize makes them feel more comfortable.?
Dunbar said that when U.S. marshals arrest someone, they take that person to a federal prison. There were once seven jails in Iowa?s southern district that housed federal inmates, but now there are only two and they are in Davenport and Muscatine.
