FHS band scores its highest ranking at Davis County
Fairfield High School marching band took second place in Division 3A competition of the Davis County Festival of Bands Saturday in Bloomfield.
According to FHS band director Jim Edgeton, the band?s 64.8 score and second place is the highest ranking the band has ever reached in its 23 years of marching in the competition.

Fairfield High School marching band took second place in Division 3A competition of the Davis County Festival of Bands Saturday in Bloomfield.
According to FHS band director Jim Edgeton, the band?s 64.8 score and second place is the highest ranking the band has ever reached in its 23 years of marching in the competition.
In addition, the FHS band?s drumline scored 98 points to take first place in Division 3A, as well as first place overall for the 11 bands in the competition.
The band?s flag corps, led by captains Heidi Menke and Jaci Bell, also placed second in Division 3A with 62 points.
First-place in Division 3A went to the Washington High School marching band with 67.7 points. The Washington band also had the top color guard/flag corps with 77 points and the top drum majors for the division. The band had the top overall drum major for the entire competition.
Also in Division 3A, the Knoxville High School marching band placed third, with 63.9 points, and the Grinnell High School marching band placed fourth, with 60.8 points.
The 100-members of the FHS marching band, under the direction of Edgeton and assistant Aaron Adam, performed ?Epic Rock,? which consisted of the songs ?Journey to the Center of the Mind,? ?She?s Not There,? ?Novus? and ?Touch the Sun.? The band?s drum majors are Shannon Cochran, Sarah Flinspach and Michael Gookin.
In Division 2A, the Pekin High School marching band placed fourth, with 52.9 points. Its color guard/flag corps placed third with 58 points, and its drumline placed fourth with 50 points.
The Pekin band director is Brenda Hagedon, and the color guard coordinator is Kim Brisby. Logan Scholtus and Maranda Baker are the drum majors.
The 38 members of the Pekin band played ?The Best of the Jackson Five,? including ?I Want You Back,? ?I?ll Be There,? ?Never Can Say Goodbye? and ?ABC.?
Also in Division 2A, the Cardinal High School marching band placed fifth, with 48.6 points. Its color guard/flag corps placed fifth with 50 points, and its drumline placed sixth, with 41 points.
The Cardinal band director is Luke Miller, and the color guard instructor is Sara Davis. Kassandra Herrera is the drum major.
The 43 members of the Cardinal band played ?In Defense of Liberty,? ?Songs of the Pride? and ?Our National March.?
Other bands in Division 2A were Clark County, which placed first with 75.3 points; Central Lee in second place with 58.5 points; Albia in third place with 55.4 points; and Putnam County in sixth place with 42.6 points.
In Division 2A, Clark County had the top color guard, with 78 points; the top drumline, with 92 points; and the top drum major. Clark County also was the top overall band for the entire competition, with 75.3 points, and the top overall color guard, with 78 points.
In Division 4A, the Ottumwa High School marching band was the only competitor. It took first place in the division with 77.5 points. Its color guard had 59 points, and its drumline had 76 points.
The Davis County High School marching band performed, but did not compete.
