The Fairfield Fire Department, and its EMS unit, report the following:
Sunday
10:50 a.m. - The fire department was called to 402 E. Fillmore Ave. to investigate carbon monoxide levels. The level was found to be 35 ppm. The residents were advised the furnace or hot water heater needs serviced. Carbon monoxide, known as CO, is a colorless, odorless deadly gas. Because it cannot be seen, tasted or smelled, it can kill a person before the person knows it is there. The poisonous gas kills approximately 534 people in the United States every year. Of that number, about 207 people were killed by CO emitted from a malfunctioning consumer product, like a stove, oven, water heater, or furnace operated by natural or LP gas. When CO is present in the air, a person breathes it in and it accumulates in the blood, causing symptoms similar to the flu: headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizzy spells, confusion and irritability. As levels increase, vomiting, loss of consciousness and eventually brain damage or death can result.
