The First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant will host a showing of the film “Jerry’s Last Mission: From Hatred to Love and Enemies to Family” from 7-9 p.m. Monday, June 19 in its fellowship hall.
“Join us as we kick off our Matthew 25 Summer Film Series,” stated a news release from the church.
Members of the film series will be joined that evening by the film’s executive producer Jim Belilove for a discussion following the film. The church invites the public to attend, though attendees should know that the film may contain some “PG-13 war content.”
“Jerry’s Last Mission” tells the story of P-51 fighter pilot Jerry Yellin, who flew combat missions over Iwo Jima and Japan. Yellin flew in the last mission over Japan in World War II. After the war, he returned home with “a dark life of post-traumatic stress disorder, survivor’s guilt and thoughts of suicide,” according to the film.
The documentary tells how Yellin learned to overcome PTSD and how he was forced to face his hated enemy once again when his youngest son, Robert, moved to Japan and married the daughter of a Kamikaze pilot. Later in life, Yellin moved to Fairfield, and that is where he met Louisa Merino, the director of this film.
