WASHINGTON — Kate Flannery and Trevin Sulentich were named Washington’s 2024 Homecoming Queen and King Thursday night, Sept. 26, at the conclusion of the high school’s annual spirit assembly.
The two candidates walked onto stage as a pair before both winning their crown, a rare occurrence for those on the court. Also rare is the fact that both are St. James graduates, saying they completed their fifth grade year at the private elementary alongside just 15 other members of the current senior class.
“I was shocked, both of us were paired together and both won as well,” Flannery said. “There’s always kind of ‘the band candidates,’ and that’s us … I’m in sports as well, but everyone sees us as the band candidates, so it’s really nice that we can represent!”
Both said they were surprised and excited to hear their names called after announcers unsealed the envelope naming the homecoming court’s top contenders.
“It kind of felt like everything was in slow motion, I had some butterflies in my stomach,” Sulentich said. “I am also friends with all the boys, and I’d be happy if any of us had gotten king.”
Other members of the 2024 Washington Homecoming Court were queen contenders Ella Greiner, Kendall Hinrichsen, Lauren Horak and Isabella Lujan, and king contenders Tyler Alderton, Logan McDole, Dirk Rothe and Luke Schiebel.
Students said they enjoyed the week of festivities, highlighting the powder puff game, the court’s visit to nursing homes and WCDC, dress-up days, the parade, and the marching band’s tour of district schools.
The Demons would later win their homecoming game against Keokuk Friday night.
