WASHINGTON — Seniors Kevin Flannery and Grace Voss were crowned Washington’s 2022 homecoming king and queen at a pep rally Thursday night.
Voss said the recognition was an honor.
“It’s just kind of surreal, but really exciting,” she said. “You always remember the previous court and the previous king and queens, so it’s something that we’ll definitely be remembered by, which is really cool.”
While the two carried themselves well, Flannery said the pressure was on with the crowd watching.
"I had to step in front of the entire school, which probably was the scariest thing out of all this,“ he said. ”I had a fear I was going to trip on her dress … it was hard to move from my spot to the chair, I thought I was about to fall.“
Voss agreed.
“Kevin could even tell I was shaking as we were walking up on the stage,” she said. “It’s just a little nerve-wracking … there’s a lot of thoughts going through my head.”
The seniors said homecoming court members were already close going into the competition.
“Some of these friends, I haven’t had classes with in a while,” Flannery said. “It was fun to just sit in a car with them, or sit in the backroom before this. It’s been a really fun experience just to get close with them again. It was the highlight of my high school.”
The king and queen were partners going into the event, with Flannery escorting Voss onto the stage. Being crowned together marked an occasion not shared by every senior class. Both said they had voted for one another.
“It was very enjoyable to hear my partner’s name called after mine,” Flannery said. “That was the best outcome, I voted for Grace too, so I’m excited she won.”
