The Fairfield eighth-grade girls? ?A? basketball team is two games away from a perfect season following a 52-28 victory over Mount Pleasant on Tuesday.
The Trojans started off hot Tuesday taking a 13-2 lead in the first quarter. Mount Pleasant chipped away in the second quarter, but the Trojans went into halftime up 26-14.
?Tonight was another solid win for us. We had a few defensive lapses, but made up for them on the offensive side,? said Fairfield coach Derek Philips. ?I had girls coughing and sick enough that they probably shouldn?t have been at school, but they are competitors. No way were they going to miss this game.?
Kylie Kurtz led all scorers with 20 points. Kenady Waugh scored 11 and Mikaela Lunsford came through with 10. Brooke McLain tallied five points, Kaylee Watson scored four and Sam Fritz chipped in two points.
Fairfield?s ?A? girls made 15 of 21 free throws on the night.
The Trojans then dropped the ?B? game 19-18.
After trailing 11-8 at the intermission, the ?B? team stormed back to take a 16-13 advantage in the fourth. Fairfield led 18-17 with one minute to go, but one final bucket by the Panthers secured the win for the visitors.
Fairfield?s Taylor Marlay led the ?B? team offense with six points, Sarah Swanson and Maggie Ferrel scored five apiece and Shelby Heston added two points.
?We had opportunities all game, but tonight was just one of those nights where the shots didn?t fall. Our girls never quit, which was great to see,? Philips said.
The ?C? game ended in a 2-all tie after two quarters of play. Shelby Heston scored the lone bucket.
?We don?t get to play a lot of ?C? games because we have a large number of girls out, which is great, and other schools do not. I was pleased that our girls came out ready to play and did a lot of things well.?
Fairfield continues its final week with the home finale Thursday vs. Ottumwa.
