FAIRFIELD – Fairfield residents interested in running for city council can start collecting signatures so their name can appear on the November ballot.
Four city council seats are up for grabs, plus the mayor’s position. Council terms are four years, while the mayor serves a two-year term.
The seats up for election on Nov. 7 are:
Ward 1 – currently held by Martha Rasmussen
Ward 3 – currently held by Judy Ham
Ward 5 – currently held by Tom Twohill
At-large – currently held by Katy Anderson
Mayor – currently held by Connie Boyer
Those who wish to run for one of these seats must fill out a petition and collect signatures, which can be turned in to Fairfield City Hall or the Jefferson County Auditor’s Office between Aug. 28 and Sept. 21, which is the deadline to have a candidate’s name appear on the ballot.
The number of signatures needed varies, with candidates in Wards 1,3, and 5 needing 10 signatures; candidates for the at-large seat needing 24 signatures; and candidates for mayor needing 28. Residents must live in the ward they represent on the council.
Petitions and signature forms are also available on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website at sos.iowa.gov.
