Jan. 2, 2024 5:17 pm
FAIRFIELD – Four juveniles were arrested in Fairfield early Tuesday morning and charged with assault, with one of the juveniles also receiving charges for resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
The Fairfield Police Department issued a news release indicating that the arrests were made when officers were dispatched to the 50 block of West Burlington Avenue at 3:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2 responding to an assault.
According to the news release, the caller told police that they were meeting with a subject to sell them a cell phone, and that during the transaction, the caller discovered the money being used to purchase the phone was fraudulent. The victim attempted to retrieve the cell phone but was allegedly assaulted by four juvenile subjects.
The juveniles took the phone and fled the scene in a vehicle. Fairfield Police Officers contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for assistance in locating the vehicle, which the deputies were able to do by performing a traffic stop on Highway 34 near Filbert Avenue, about 3 miles west of Fairfield. Officers were able to locate the stolen cell phone and counterfeit money.
“While officers were taking the juveniles into custody, one of the juveniles resisted arrest and assaulted one of the officers on scene,” the news release stated.
Two of the juveniles were charged with second degree robbery (Class C felony), a third juvenile was charged with robbery and forgery, and the fourth was charged with robbery, interference with official acts and assault on a peace officer.
All four juveniles are being held in the Southern Iowa Area Juvenile Detention Center in Montrose pending their court appearance. The police indicated that they would not release the names of the juveniles.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
