MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant Fourth of July committee is in desperate need of volunteers leading to a year with less than normal festivities at the Fourth of July celebration.
This year they are unable to provide much more than fireworks at McMillan Park for the Fourth of July celebration this year, largely due to the fact the nonprofit organization is running out of volunteers to stage the normal festivities.
Another factor was the uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The committee didn’t want to have to pull back on their celebration but with the uncertainty they had no choice.
“It’s disappointing that we have to pare down, but with the pandemic we didn’t know what restrictions there would be at this point, so we just decided to do fireworks,” said Kirsten Heerdt, the president of the Fourth of July committee.
This shortage of volunteers is only going to get worse as the committee that runs the Fourth of July celebration is planning on retiring after this year’s celebration.
Heerdt said that the members are ready to pass over the organization to whoever is interested in the job.
With many of the members serving more than 20 years on the committee, they are ready to hand it over.
The group is looking for dedicated people to take over the project with minimal time requirements outside of the Fourth of July weekend.
To contact Heerdt call Old Threshers and ask for Kirsten Heerdt or email her at kirsten.heerdt@gmail.com
The Fourth of July celebration is staffed in large part to the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, which sets up the fireworks.
