FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Community School District Board of Directors voted to select Frank Broz to serve as a school board member during its meeting Monday night.
Broz will serve for a little more than two months until the Nov. 7 election, when voters will choose a candidate to finish the final two years of the four-year term held by Kelly Scott, who stepped down from the board at the end of July because he and his wife were moving to England.
Board member Margo Von Strohuber nominated Broz from a list of six people who petitioned to fill Scott’s seat on the board. The other five were David Eastburn, Barbara Kistler, Mark Thornton, Jordan Hagans, and Theresa Tuvera.
Broz was in the audience during the meeting, and as soon as the board voted to appoint him to fill the seat, board chair Christi Welsh swore him into office. Broz then sat at the table and participated as a board member for the remainder of the meeting.
Broz is no stranger to the school board, having served a single term from 2017-2021. Welsh asked Broz if he intended to run for the open seat in November, and he said he did not. Board member Tai Ward said he liked hearing that, because he didn’t want the board to appoint someone now who planned to be a candidate later.
“I feel like if we would have put someone on here, though it is good experience for a couple of months, it is the board putting their thumb on the scale a little bit, and showing preferential treatment toward someone who is running,” Ward said.
Board member Mark Porter was the only one to vote against appointing Broz, though he said it had nothing to do with Broz personally. Porter said he specifically wanted to appoint someone who was going to run in November, because he felt like they would benefit from a few months of experience.
Broz thanked the board for selecting him to serve, even though he only plans to stay on for a couple of months.
“I am very excited to be able to rejoin the board for the next few months,” he said. “There is a lot of enthusiasm to improve and grow our district right now, and it is a privilege to be a part of it.”
