The Friends of Henry County Health Center Soup Supper brought a crowd Saturday evening to Calvary Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Community members drove up to the church’s front doors to place their order and drove around the back to pick it up.
The Midwest Old Threshers Sweet Sixteen participants volunteered for the event, taking orders in the front and helping give out orders in the back.
Miss Sweet Sixteen 2021 Kalayna Durr said volunteering is one of her favorite things to do.
"I love to volunteer," Durr said. "I wish I could just volunteer all the time. I think it's great to get out and serve the community."
They served various dishes, including chili, chicken noodle soup, and baked potatoes with sides. The choice of sides were carrots, celery, and a pickle, as well as a choice of pumpkin, pecan, or apple pie. People could choose one or two entrees for $7 or $9, respectively.
Last year's event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, the supper was held as a drive-through to make the public feel safe because of the continuing pandemic.
For years, the soup supper has been the primary fundraiser for the Friends of HCHC and its Healthcare Scholarship Fund.
Anyone going to school in the health care field, HCHC associates, and family members are eligible to apply for the scholarship. It's a loan scholarship, which means the loan amount is forgiven if the recipient works for HCHC for a minimum of two years following graduation.
The scholarship awards $2,000 per year per individual if the recipient completes the obligation agreement with HCHC. Up to $1,000 will be waived if the obligations are fulfilled.
