Dear Stewart families,
At Stewart we use a research based approach, called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports), to teach and reinforce positive behavior.
All students are explicitly taught skill lessons for common areas in the school including bathroom, hallway, lunchroom, and recess.
Skill lessons are taught for classroom areas such as whole group, small group, entering a room, and getting along with others.
Students earn tickets for following these expectations and when our school has reached a goal, we have a school wide reward.
The guiding principles we have chosen for PBIS are Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe.
We continue to teach, re-teach, and practice these skills throughout the year.
When your child follows these expectations, it helps them be successful at school. In a few days, your child will be bringing home a paper with the common areas and classroom expectations.
We encourage you to hang it up at home and speak with your child about it.
Below are examples of the language your children will hear when following the expectations to encourage positive behavior.
-Example: Thank you for being responsible and staying at a level 1 in the hallway.
-Example: Great job being respectful and including others at recess!
-Example: You are being safe by staying in your bubble at the lunch table.
-Example: I am giving you this ticket because you followed the go, flush, wash, and leave expectations in the bathroom.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the school’s office at 319-653-3244. We are so excited to watch kids grow by being respectful, responsible, and safe!
Sincerely,
Mike Marsden
Principal
